Description

Tsuwabuki witches broom is a characteristic plant disease manifested by the abnormal development of multiple thin, stunted shoots clustered together. The causative agents are typically phytoplasmas, specialized bacteria that colonize the phloem tissue of the host plant, disrupting its normal hormonal regulation.

This pathology specifically targets Farfugium japonicum, commonly known as Tsuwabuki. The disease is particularly problematic in nursery settings and home gardens where favorable conditions for insect vectors and close plant spacing increase the risk of rapid transmission.

Key symptoms include the formation of dense, broom-like growths on stems. The leaves emerging from these clusters are usually reduced in size, chlorotic, and deformed. Over time, the plant loses its ability to produce normal foliage, leading to severe vigor decline and eventual death of the specimen.

The spread of the disease is facilitated by environmental factors that support vector populations, such as leafhoppers. Phytoplasmas are transmitted through these sap-sucking insects or through the propagation of infected cuttings. Once the pathogen is established within the plant's system, it spreads systemically throughout the vascular network.

There is currently no chemical cure for phytoplasma infections. Therefore, management relies on rigorous sanitation and prevention. This involves the immediate removal and destruction of symptomatic plants, controlling insect vector populations with appropriate insecticides, and ensuring that any new planting material is sourced from certified, pathogen-free nurseries.
