Description
Vein mosaic is a viral disease affecting grapevines, caused by the Grapevine vein mosaic virus (GVMV). As an intracellular pathogen, the virus disrupts the normal physiological processes of the grapevine, spreading through the vascular tissues and remaining active throughout the entire lifespan of the host plant.
The primary host for this disease is the cultivated grapevine (Vitis vinifera). Since the virus is systemic, it permeates all tissues of the vine, making the infection permanent. Once a grapevine is infected, there are no curative chemical treatments available to eliminate the virus from the plant tissues.
The characteristic symptoms of vein mosaic include chlorotic patterns that develop along the leaf veins, creating a mosaic or netted appearance. These symptoms are most visible on young leaves during the early stages of the growing season. In severe cases, the foliage may show slight curling or distortion, and the vine's overall vigor can be noticeably reduced.
The spread of vein mosaic is primarily facilitated by the use of infected propagation material, such as cuttings or rootstocks. Additionally, mechanical transmission occurs in the vineyard during pruning, grafting, or other cultural practices when contaminated tools transfer sap containing the virus from diseased vines to healthy ones.
The economic impact of vein mosaic is significant due to the reduction in vine growth and fruit yield. Infected vines often exhibit poor bud break, reduced canopy density, and smaller clusters with berries that fail to ripen properly. This decrease in both quantity and quality of the harvest makes the disease a major concern for commercial viticulture.

- Implement strict sanitation protocols, including the disinfection of pruning shears and grafting tools.
- Rogue out and destroy infected vines to prevent secondary spread within the vineyard.
