Vibriosis is a bacterial disease affecting various plant species, caused by bacteria of the Vibrionaceae family. While commonly associated with aquatic environments, these bacteria can act as phytopathogens under specific agricultural conditions, particularly in high-moisture environments or intensive hydroponic cultivation systems.

The disease primarily impacts greenhouse vegetables, leafy greens, and certain ornamental plants. Pathogens infiltrate plant tissues through water pores, root lesions, or wounds created during routine maintenance or by pests. Once inside, they proliferate rapidly, interfering with the vascular system and cellular structure of the host.

Symptoms of infection include sudden wilting, often mistaken for water stress, which quickly progresses to water-soaked lesions on roots and the stem base. These lesions soften and darken over time, eventually emitting a distinct, pungent odor associated with bacterial decay. The affected plant tissue becomes necrotic and loses its structural integrity.

Conditions favoring the development and spread of Vibrionaceae include poor aeration of the root zone, high ambient humidity, and temperatures that promote rapid bacterial multiplication. The disease is predominantly transmitted through contaminated irrigation water, non-sterilized tools, or movement of infected substrate particles between plants.

The economic impact of vibriosis can be devastating, as infections spread aggressively within high-density planting environments. Management strategies must prioritize strict sanitation protocols, including the sterilization of hydroponic nutrient solutions and irrigation equipment. Early detection and the prompt removal of infected plants are essential to prevent widespread crop loss in greenhouse facilities.
