Description

Vibriosis in plants is a destructive bacterial disease caused by members of the Vibrionales order. While these bacteria are frequently found in aquatic ecosystems, certain strains act as phytopathogens, causing rapid soft tissue decay and systemic wilting in various plant species.

The pathogen is characterized by its rapid colonization of host tissues through mechanical wounds or natural stomatal openings. Once inside, the bacteria produce extracellular enzymes that degrade plant cell wall structures. This process leads to the loss of tissue integrity, causing the plant to collapse in a short period of time.

Target crops primarily include greenhouse vegetables, ornamentals, and leafy greens. High humidity levels and poor soil drainage serve as the primary catalysts for infection, as these conditions allow the motile bacteria to swim through water films on the leaf surface and into the surrounding soil profile.

Symptoms often begin as water-soaked spots on stems, leaves, or tubers, which quickly expand and discolor. The tissue becomes soft, pulpy, and emits a pungent, foul odor due to secondary saprophytic decay. In advanced stages, the vascular system is compromised, leading to total plant wilt and death.
