Woronichinia is a genus of colonial cyanobacteria widely recognized for its role in harmful algal blooms in freshwater ecosystems. While not a direct parasite of terrestrial crops, its presence in agricultural water supplies poses a risk to irrigation systems and overall water quality, potentially harming the health of sensitive crops.

The primary concern regarding Woronichinia is the production of potent cyanotoxins. When contaminated water is used for overhead irrigation, these toxins can accumulate in the soil or adhere to the plant surface, potentially causing phytotoxicity or reducing yield in greenhouse and field operations.

Identification of the bloom is characterized by a thick, slimy, blue-green accumulation on the water surface. Unlike other algae, Woronichinia colonies are structurally dense, consisting of cells grouped within a clear, distinct mucilaginous envelope, which makes them resilient to common mechanical filtration methods used in farms.

The bloom development is heavily dependent on eutrophication, a process fueled by nitrogen and phosphorus runoff from agricultural fields. High light intensity and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C accelerate the reproductive cycle of the bacteria, leading to the rapid transformation of clear water into a toxic sludge.

Effective management requires a combination of strategies, primarily focusing on nutrient management plans to reduce runoff into irrigation ponds.
