Description
Wound tumor disease is a viral plant pathology caused by the Wound tumor virus (WTV). This virus belongs to the Phytoreovirus genus and is notable for its unique ability to trigger pathological cell proliferation in wounded tissues of its host plants.
The virus affects a wide range of botanical hosts, significantly impacting crops such as tobacco, as well as various clovers and other herbaceous species. It is a systemic infection that colonizes the vascular tissues, altering the developmental physiology of the host organism.
Symptoms are primarily manifested as tumorous outgrowths or galls appearing on the roots and stems. These structures result from the virus stimulating uncontrolled cell division in the cambium layer. As the disease progresses, the plant experiences significant stunting, reduced nutrient transport, and loss of vigor.
The dissemination of the virus relies entirely on insect vectors, specifically leafhoppers such as Agallia constricta. The virus is capable of replicating within both the plant host and the insect, establishing a persistent infection loop that makes control difficult in agricultural settings.
Management strategies focus on breaking the transmission cycle and minimizing the virus reservoir. Recommended actions include:
- controlling leafhopper populations with systemic insecticides;
- removing infected plants to prevent inoculum spread;
- eliminating reservoir weeds near cultivation sites;
- utilizing resistant plant cultivars;
- maintaining strict phytosanitary practices.
