Description
Wound tumor virus (WTV) is a plant pathogenic virus belonging to the genus Phytoreovirus within the family Reoviridae. As a double-stranded RNA virus, it features a complex genome organized into 12 distinct segments, enabling it to successfully parasitize a variety of host plant species, particularly among dicots.
The hallmark of the disease caused by this pathogen is the induction of tumors or galls, which form primarily at sites of mechanical injury to the plant roots or stems. These abnormal tissue growths disrupt the vascular system, significantly impeding the translocation of water and essential nutrients, leading to physiological distress in the host plant.
The biological cycle of WTV is unique because it is an arbovirus-like plant virus, requiring specific insect vectors—leafhoppers of the genus Agallia—for dissemination. Remarkably, the virus can replicate within its insect vector and is passed vertically to the vector's offspring, ensuring the pathogen's persistence in the environment regardless of the immediate presence of infected host plants.
Economic damage caused by WTV involves severe stunting and general weakness of infected crops, which manifests as reduced biomass and poor growth performance. Fields heavily infested with the insect vectors during the early stages of plant development are particularly susceptible to severe outbreaks, making early detection vital for large-scale agricultural operations.
Managing the Wound tumor virus requires a multi-faceted approach focused on vector control and environmental sanitation. Since no direct curative treatment exists for plants once they are infected, the primary management strategies include:
- controlling leafhopper populations through integrated pest management (IPM);
- eradicating alternate weed hosts that harbor the virus;
- selecting resistant or tolerant plant varieties;
- maintaining clean cultivation practices to minimize mechanical injury that triggers tumor formation.
