Description

Pathogen and type of disease. The causative agent is the Gram-negative bacterium Xanthomonas euroxanthea. This pathogen is responsible for bacterial leaf spots and tissue necrosis in various plant species. As a systemic and parenchyma-infecting bacterium, it disrupts the plant's vascular transport and metabolic activities, leading to localized tissue death and reduced vigor.

Affected crops. The pathogen exhibits a host range that primarily includes several species within the Rosaceae family and various agricultural vegetable crops. By infiltrating the intercellular spaces of host plants, the bacteria establish infections that can persist throughout the growing season, affecting both foliage and, in some cases, fruit quality.

Symptoms and signs. The disease manifests as angular or irregular spots on leaves, which typically darken as the tissue dies. A distinctive yellow chlorotic halo often surrounds these necrotic spots. Under high humidity conditions, the presence of a bacterial ooze (exudate) on the underside of the leaves or along the stem is a diagnostic indicator of an active bacterial infection.

Conditions for development and harmfulness. The bacteria thrive in environments with high relative humidity and moderate temperatures, typically between 20°C and 28°C. Rain splash and wind are the primary vectors for local spread. The resulting damage causes premature leaf drop, stunted growth, and significant yield losses due to the reduction in the plant's photosynthetic capacity.

Control and prevention measures. Effective management relies on strict sanitation and preventive chemical applications. Key strategies include:

  • Utilizing certified disease-free seeds and planting stock.
  • Applying copper-based bactericides as a preventative measure during vulnerable growth stages.
  • Implementing proper irrigation practices to minimize leaf wetness duration.
  • Removing and destroying infected plant debris to reduce the overwintering inoculum.
