Description
Bacterial spot is a destructive disease caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas vesicatoria. It is a major threat to solanaceous crops, primarily tomatoes and peppers worldwide. The pathogen is highly contagious and can cause significant economic losses in both commercial field production and greenhouse environments by affecting fruit quality and overall plant health.
Symptoms typically appear on leaves, stems, and fruits. Initially, small, water-soaked spots develop on the leaves, which eventually turn dark brown or black with a distinct yellow halo. As the infection progresses, leaves may yellow, wither, and drop prematurely. On fruits, the disease causes raised, scabby, dark-colored lesions that make the produce unmarketable and susceptible to secondary rot.
The bacterium thrives in warm and humid conditions, with optimal development occurring between 20°C and 30°C. It overwinters in plant debris, infested seeds, and alternative weed hosts. The pathogen spreads rapidly through splashing water, such as rain or overhead irrigation, and can be transmitted by contaminated tools, machinery, or even insect activity that creates openings for bacterial entry.
The economic impact of bacterial spot is significant, as it leads to reduced yields, lower fruit quality, and increased susceptibility to other diseases. Because the bacteria can compromise the entire plant canopy, photosynthesis is drastically inhibited, leading to stunted growth.
