Description

Xylella fastidiosa is a highly destructive, gram-negative bacterium that acts as a systemic plant pathogen. It colonizes the plant's xylem, the tissue responsible for transporting water and minerals. By aggregating within these vessels, the bacteria disrupt the hydraulic system, causing severe physiological stress and chronic decline of the infected host.

The host range of Xylella is exceptionally broad, encompassing over 300 plant species including economically significant crops like grapes, olives, almonds, citrus, and various coffee varieties. The versatility of the pathogen allows it to adapt to diverse climatic conditions, making it a global threat to agricultural stability and biodiversity.

Clinical signs of infection often start with leaf scorch, where the margins of the leaves turn brown and die, resembling a burn. This is typically accompanied by chlorosis, stunted growth, and twig dieback. As the vascular obstruction worsens, plants exhibit rapid wilting, reduced fruit set, and eventual death due to the inability to transport nutrients.

Transmission occurs primarily through xylem-feeding insects, such as sharpshooters and spittlebugs. These vectors acquire the bacteria while feeding on infected plant sap and transmit it during subsequent feeding bouts. Long-distance spread is largely facilitated by the trade and movement of infected nursery stocks and ornamental plants.

Current management strategies are primarily focused on exclusion and containment. This involves implementing strict quarantine regulations, inspecting nurseries, and monitoring for vectors. There is no known cure for infected plants, thus eradication protocols, such as removing symptomatic hosts and managing insect vector populations, are critical to slowing the pathogen's spread.
