Yersinia plant disease is a serious bacterial condition caused by microorganisms of the Yersinia genus, which, while more commonly known in animal pathology, can significantly impact crop production. These bacteria function as opportunistic pathogens that exploit mechanical injuries or environmental stress to colonize plant tissues.
The primary symptom of this infection is soft, mushy rot that often develops at the base of the stem or on the roots. Infected parts become water-soaked, discolored, and soft, eventually turning into a slimy mass. The progression of the disease is rapid, and it is frequently accompanied by a foul odor resulting from the breakdown of plant tissues by bacterial enzymes.
Target crops primarily include various root vegetables such as carrots, beets, and radishes, as well as several cruciferous vegetables. While the disease can manifest in the field, it is most destructive during the post-harvest period, especially when vegetables are stored in environments with inadequate ventilation and improper temperature controls.
The spread of Yersinia is highly dependent on humidity levels and the presence of physical damage on the crop. Soil moisture and the use of contaminated tools facilitate the transmission of the bacteria. Once present in the storage environment, the pathogen can quickly spread from infected vegetables to healthy ones, leading to total loss of stored batches.
