Description
Late-summer variety of folk selection. Currently excluded from the State Register, but still found in old gardens of the middle belt of Russia.
Trees are fairly large. The crown is narrowly pyramidal in youth and round-conical at full fruiting, composed of dense, numerous, upward-directed skeletal branches.
Shoots are long, fairly thick, brown, with rare, inconspicuous lenticels, slightly hairy at the upper part. Leaves are large, on long petioles. Some leaves are slightly curved like a scoop.
Fruits are above-average size, elongated, conical towards the apex, greenish-white, without a covering color. Skin is thin, smooth, very tender, shiny, with a slight waxy coating. Peduncle is long, thin, greenish-brown. The calyx is filled in, usually with a fleshy bump at the base of the peduncle. The calyx is medium-sized, closed. The receptacle is narrow, deep.
Flesh is white, finely textured, juicy, with pleasant acidity and a delicate aroma. Chemical composition of fruits: total sugars — 10.2%, titratable acids — 0.82%, ascorbic acid — 8.6 mg/100g.
In the conditions of the Oryol region, harvest ripeness occurs in the second half of August.
Fruits hold well on the tree and can be stored for three weeks after harvest.
The variety has low precocity. Commercial yield appears on the 8th to 10th year after planting trees on seedling rootstocks. Seven-year-old Calville White trees in the VNIISPK garden yielded only 5 centners per hectare, whereas Moscow Pear — 38, and Il'inskoe Chernenko — 75 centners per hectare. Starting from the 10th to 15th year, trees produce good yields. Fruitfulness of mature trees is irregularly periodic.
The variety is relatively winter-hardy. Overall, it is less winter-hardy than Korichnoye Ploskatoye and Moscow Pear, but more winter-hardy than Osennoye Ploskatoye and Welles. Resistance to fruit rot is medium.
Advantages of the variety: marketable fruits, good taste qualities, transportability of fruits.
Disadvantages of the variety: relatively low precocity, absence of covering color on fruits, relatively late ripening for a summer variety.
