Description
Winter variety created by sowing in 1954 of seeds of the 'Pepin Shafranny' variety from open pollination. Breeders: E. N. Sedov, V. K. Zaets, N. G. Krasova, T. A. Trofimova. In 1983, the variety was accepted for State Testing, and in 2001 it was included in the State Register of selection achievements approved for use (regionally adapted).
Tree large, with a medium-dense rounded crown. Main branches curved, spaced out, departing from the trunk at nearly straight angles. Branch tips directed upward. Bark on the trunk and main branches smooth, grayish-brown. Predominant fruiting types — simple and complex clusters, spear-shaped.
Medium-length shoots, straight, round in cross-section, brownish-gray, with few small lenticels. Buds pressed, small, conical, hairy. Leaves elongated-elliptical, long-pointed, dark green, wrinkled, shiny, with delicate venation. Leaf blade convex. Leaf margin wavy, finely toothed. Petiole thin, hairy with anthocyanin coloration.
Fruits medium-sized (140 g), broad-conical, broad-ribbed. Skin smooth, dry. Main color at harvest time greenish-yellow, at consumption time golden-yellow. Cover color on most of the fruit diffuse, pinkish. Subcutaneous dots numerous, medium-sized, greenish, weakly visible. Fruit stem medium-length, thick, curved, upright. Calyx medium-sized, blunt-conical with slight rusting. Receptacle closed. Bases narrow, ribbed. Seed chambers closed, small.
Fruit flesh white, dense, fine-grained, slightly acidic-sweet, very juicy. Due to its attractive appearance, fruits are rated 4.4 points, and by taste — 4.3 points. Chemical composition of fruits: total sugars — 10.2%, titratable acids — 0.56%, ascorbic acid — 12.8 mg/100g.
Harvest ripeness in the Oryol region occurs in the third decade of September.
Fruits can be stored until mid-January.
High-yielding variety. 11-14-year-old trees yielded 162 centners/ha, 25-30-year-old trees — 200 centners/ha. In terms of winter hardiness, the variety exceeds the control variety 'Pepin Shafranny'. The variety is highly resistant to scab.
Fruits and leaves even in epidemic years had scab damage not exceeding 1.0–1.5 points, whereas in 'Pepin Shafranny' fruits were damaged up to 3.5 points, and leaves up to 3.1 points.
Advantages of the variety: high and regular yield, fruit quality, high resistance to scab.
Disadvantages of the variety: large trees.
