Description
Winter variety selected by the Southern Ural Research Institute of Fruit and Vegetable Growing and Potato Cultivation. Obtained from seedlings of spontaneous pollination of 'Vydyubetsky Weeping'. Breeders: M. A. Mazunin, N. F. Mazunina, V. I. Putyatyn. Widely distributed and approved for cultivation in the Ural and West Siberian regions of Russia.
Tree is a natural dwarf with a flat-horizontally spreading crown. Height of trees on seedling rootstocks up to 1.5-2.0 m, on vegetatively propagated clonal rootstocks up to 1.2-1.5 m. Bark on trunk and main branches light brown. Fruit-bearing on all types of fruiting wood, occasionally fruits on last year's growth.
Shoots are greenish-brown, thin. Leaves large, elongated-oval, dark green, strongly hairy, margins finely toothed.
Fruits of medium size, round-conical, slightly ribbed. Fruit skin smooth, dry, glossy, light yellow, with a diffuse red blush over most of the fruit. Peduncle medium length and thickness, upright.
Fruit flesh white, firm, juicy, fine-grained, tart-sweet, excellent flavor.
Fruits contain 14.4% soluble solids, 9.2% sugars, 0.8% titratable acids, 18.7 mg/100g ascorbic acid, and 1.3% pectin substances (on fresh weight).
Storage life 120 days.
Fruits suitable for fresh consumption and processing into compotes, jams, preserves.
Best pollinators for this variety: Krovnoe, Sokolovskoe, Prizemlennoe.
Trees begin fruiting on the 3rd-4th year after grafting. Fruiting is regular in early years, then becomes irregularly periodic. Yield up to 80 kg per tree. Winter hardiness of the 'Snowdrop' variety is high. During epidemics of apple scab, trees are affected by no more than 1 point.
Advantages of the variety: natural dwarf, good ecological adaptability, high yield, excellent taste and market quality of fruits.
Disadvantages of the variety: fruit quality declines under prolonged high summer temperatures and dry air.
Variety used in breeding dwarf apple varieties.
