Description
Large-seeded bean Bachus is an early variety with high yields and resistance to adverse weather conditions, including night frosts. The plant reaches a height of 80 to 120 cm, has a strong root system and sturdy stem, ensuring wind resistance and making it suitable as a windbreak for heat-loving crops. Due to its cold tolerance, seed sowing is recommended in the first decade of April into nitrogen-fertilized soil. Planting depth varies depending on soil type: 6-8 cm for light soils and 4-5 cm for loamy soils, with row spacing around 50 cm and plant spacing no less than 15 cm.
Bachus bean pods mature in two stages: the first stage occurs 50-55 days after sowing, when the pods are greenish-white and in milk ripeness. These pods can be consumed immediately or frozen for later use. The second stage of full maturity occurs 110-120 days after sowing, when the pods turn cream-brown and retain their marketable appearance throughout the winter. Harvesting lasts 7 to 10 days, during which the pods easily detach by hand without damaging the plant.
Bachus is valued for its versatility and excellent taste with oily, slightly sweet notes. It is a rich source of easily digestible plant-based protein, vitamins, and minerals, making it popular among chefs. Additionally, the crop contributes nitrogen to the soil, enhancing its fertility and positively affecting crop rotation.
