Description
Purple Heart is a perennial herbaceous plant with characteristic purple-and-white flower heads up to 5–6 cm in diameter. The flowers form disc-shaped heads, in the center of which a vivid purple bloom is prominently expressed, while around it tube-shaped white petals spread out, creating an effective contrasting combination.
The plant reaches a height of 40–60 cm and a width of up to 40 cm. The leaves are oblong, rich green with a light whitish bloom. Soil moisture should be moderate: prefers loamy, alkaline, well-drained soil, but can also grow in less favorable conditions, including poor soils. Resistant to short-term drought and rarely gets sick; requires watering during prolonged dryness.
Purple Heart thrives in sunny areas as well as slightly shaded spots. It easily fits into group plantings, flower beds, borders, gravel gardens, and mixed borders with other sun-loving perennials (echinacea, veronica, monarda). The plant does not require winter cover – hardiness USDA 4. Blooming begins at the end of May/beginning of June and continues until July inclusive. Thanks to simple care and resistance to unfavorable conditions, this species is suitable for both professional landscape designers and home garden enthusiasts.
