The Turkish breeding company May Seed Group has introduced the Starex F1, a cucumber hybrid specifically designed for farmers who prefer traditional open-field cultivation with natural pollination. Its generative plant type allows the crop to focus energy on consistent fruit production rather than excessive vegetative growth.

Key Advantages in the Field

This hybrid is built on robust resistance to a complex of foliage and soil-borne pathogens. For many producers, managing leaf spot diseases is a major expense, but Starex F1 demonstrates excellent field tolerance to:

• Anthracnose;
• Angular bacterial spot;
• Cladosporiosis and brown spot;
• Mycosphaerella spot.

This makes it an optimal choice for farms aiming for a balanced approach to chemical protection, allowing for a reduction in the number of fungicide applications.

Harvesting and Quality Features

The market characteristics of Starex F1 meet the requirements of both wholesale markets and the processing industry. The 9–10 cm long fruits feature a 3.4:1 ratio, considered the “gold standard” for pickling varieties. The coarsely warty texture, combined with a deep dark green color, ensures an excellent commercial appearance even after transportation.

First harvests typically begin 50–55 days after germination. Due to its generative growth habit, the plant requires balanced nutrition, particularly with a focus on potassium during the second half of the season to support high yields. While Starex F1 is not suited for closed greenhouses without bee access, it delivers maximum performance in open field conditions, reliably handling temperature fluctuations typical of the mid-season.
