Description
Psathyrostachys BOZOISKIY – a perennial forage grass developed in Kazakhstan based on wild ecotypes of Psathyrostachys juncea. The variety is distinguished by high drought resistance, frost resistance, and the ability to grow on saline soils. Thanks to the strongly developed fibrous root system, the plant quickly recovers after trampling and maintains high productivity even in dry steppe conditions.
Forage qualities of Bozoiskiy exceed many other varieties: crude protein content reaches 17–20%, and 100 kg of green mass contains 33–35 feed units. The plant is well eaten by cattle, especially in spring and autumn when the mass is in the tillering and pre-heading stages. Generative stems are not eaten, making it convenient for pasture use.
To grow Bozoiskiy, it is recommended to sow seeds on clean, fertile plots with good soil moisture. Optimal sowing periods are April 20–30 (early spring) or May 1–10 (spring), or October 10–25 for winter sowing. Seed sowing depth is 1–2 cm for winter sowing and 2–3 cm for early spring sowing. Care includes weed control, interrow loosening, and application of nitrogen fertilizers in spring or autumn. Seeds easily shed, so harvest must be conducted within a short period, followed by drying and cleaning for further use.
