Description
Yugana currant is a large-fruited variety with early ripening, starting to bear berries in mid-May and reaching peak harvest by the end of June. The fruits have an oval or slightly spoon-shaped shape, up to 4 cm long, weighing from 1.4 to 2 grams. The color is deep purple with a characteristic waxy bloom, medium-density skin, which ensures good preservation during transport and storage.
The taste of Yugana berries combines a sweet-sour dessert note, making them excellent for fresh consumption, as well as for making jams, liqueurs, and other confectionery products. Thanks to high frost resistance and resistance to berry shedding, the berries maintain integrity even during long-term storage.
For successful cultivation of the variety, a sunny location protected from strong winds is required. Plants prefer fertile, loose, moist loamy or sandy soils with a pH of 5.5–7.5 and poorly tolerate waterlogging. The crown of the bushes is round, dense, up to 1.5 m high and 1.9 m wide; young shoots are straight and green. A distance of 1 to 1.5 meters between plants is recommended, as well as the presence of other currant varieties nearby to ensure pollination. Spring sanitary pruning from the fifth year of age helps maintain the crown shape and increase yield.
