Description
KUZMINSKY SEMKO is an annual purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) that germinates quickly and reaches technical maturity within 15‑20 days after sprouting, making it ideal for early harvest. The plant is characterized by juicy, fleshy leaves colored green with a yellowish tint, which are rich in ascorbic acid and carotene. The leaves are arranged from alternate to nearly opposite, ensuring a dense greenery on the bed.
Purslane Kuzminsky Semko exhibits a light-loving nature: growth slows down at temperatures below 20 °C, and the plant cannot withstand negative temperatures, dying even from slight frosts. The flowers are small yellow, bisexual, located in pairs or threes in the leaf axils and on branchlets, while the fruit is a small egg-shaped capsule with seeds that scatter upon ripening.
The variety is widely used as a garden plant: the yield of greens can reach up to 1 kg from one square meter. To obtain maximum yield, it is recommended to perform several cuts during the season and fertilize after each of them to support growth and development. Kuzminsky Semko is suitable for fresh consumption – leaves and young shoots can be eaten directly from the bed, as well as for canning. With proper care, the plant can replace a lawn on dry soils, however, in this case, it is necessary to completely remove the remnants of the plant to prevent the spread of seeds that maintain germination for up to 10 years.
