A robust, tall-growing soybean variety with excellent rot resistance and reliable yield performance.
Description
Stability and Height: Field Experience with OAC Bounty
When working with soy from Can-Gro Genetics, the first thing you notice is the plant habit. OAC Bounty is certainly not a short variety. With proper agronomy, the plants grow to 140–150 cm, which places specific demands on combine harvesting. I have personally observed that at this height, the lower pod is set high enough to be critical for minimizing harvest losses. The header passes cleanly, and there is no need to shave the soil.
Resistance to Rot: Fact vs. Fiction
In wet autumn conditions, the issue of rot becomes critical. The breeder, Istvan Rajkan (University of Guelph), clearly hardcoded pathogen resistance into the genetics, and it shows. Throughout my years of working with OAC Bounty, I have never encountered a total rot infestation that would require emergency measures or lead to crop write-offs. The variety thrives even on difficult soils where other crops might start rotting due to moisture.
Cultivation Nuances
- Seeding Density: Due to the tall stalks, I recommend against over-seeding. The plant is robust and needs space for photosynthesis and proper air circulation. If planted too densely, the stalks may lodge in the wind.
- Harvesting: The high biomass produces a significant amount of crop residue. Be prepared for the combine to require an efficient threshing system to cleanly extract grain from the thick, strong stems.
- Economics: Fuel consumption per hectare remains standard, but due to the high yield potential per plant, the cost per ton of grain is quite competitive.
There are no special maintenance requirements—it is classic, reliable Canadian genetics. The key is timely pest control and avoiding leaving the soy in the field for too long, despite its disease resistance.
