Genetic Potential and Phytosanitary Protection

The «Adastra» sugar beet hybrid from the VNIS selection center is the result of long-term work on adapting root crops to the conditions of intensive farming in Ukraine. The key feature of this hybrid lies in the synergy between its morphology and disease resistance. The cylindrical-conical shape of the root crop was chosen by breeders for a specific reason: this geometry ensures optimal penetration into the soil profile, which minimizes losses during mechanical harvesting and facilitates soil removal.

Technical Aspects of Stability

For an agronomist, «Adastra» represents a predictable response to the most prevalent pathogens in sugar beet cultivation zones. A high level of tolerance to a complex of diseases is achieved through the following mechanisms:

• Cercospora Leaf Spot: The hybrid possesses increased resistance to the fungus Cercospora beticola, which allows the leaf apparatus to remain active until harvest, thereby preserving sugar accumulation rates.
• Rots and Powdery Mildew: The selection work conducted by the team of Petro Smetana, Oksana Dubrovna, and the Pariy family has created a barrier that minimizes the risk of root rot during storage.

The medium size of the root crop, combined with high tissue density, makes «Adastra» a versatile tool for achieving stable yields even under conditions of moderate moisture deficit. The lack of propensity for premature bolting further protects investments in seed material.
