Description
Beet sugar variety FITIS is a warm-loving, heat-tolerant biennial root crop with a cylindrical root weighing about 700 grams. The plant forms a basal rosette of leaves with a semi-erect shape and medium-sized, moderately corrugated leaf blades. The root system is taprooted, penetrating to a depth of 2-2.5 meters, which provides good drought resistance and enables effective water absorption from deep soil layers. The vegetative period lasts up to 120 days, and the maturity period is average. The root has a relatively smooth surface, which facilitates harvesting and reduces soil adhesion.
The optimal temperature for FITIS seed germination is from +4 to +17°C, with emergence time directly depending on temperature, varying by 10-15 days. For growth and development, the most favorable temperature is 20-22°C, although photosynthesis proceeds successfully even at temperatures above 40°C. The plant is sensitive to frost and dies at temperatures around -4-5°C, but during the pre-harvest period, it can withstand frosts down to -5°C without damage to sugar accumulation.
Sugar beet FITIS exhibits high resistance to diseases such as cercosporosis, powdery mildew, and root rot. Sugar content in modern varieties reaches 18-20%, making it highly sought after for sugar and syrup production. Additionally, this crop is used in culinary applications for making borscht and kvass, as well as as a non-waste feed crop. High cultivation efficiency is achieved through winter sowing in open ground, which contributes to obtaining a high-quality yield.
