Field experience with Soltis F 5 DN 3 MKA

When selecting a sunflower hybrid for the Clearfield (Euro-Lightning) system, stability is our primary goal. Working with the F 5 DN 3 MKA hybrid from the French breeder Soltis, you immediately notice its consistency. As a simple hybrid, it doesn’t present surprises like uneven germination or lodging, making field management straightforward.

Agronomic performance

The plant height of 170–180 cm makes harvesting with any standard header efficient and low-loss. The medium-sized, convex head is optimal for moisture control, allowing the crop to dry down effectively before harvest. With a vegetation period of 110–120 days, it fits perfectly into typical crop rotation schedules without requiring extreme measures.

The standout feature of this hybrid is its robust immune system. In high-humidity conditions where other fields might struggle with fungal infections, the F 5 DN 3 MKA remains resilient:

• Excellent resistance to white and gray rot.
• Strong defense against phomopsis and phoma.
• Effective tolerance to powdery mildew.

Efficiency and oil yield

For us, the bottom line is oil content. The 50–55% range is achievable and consistent in the field. By utilizing the Euro-Lightning technology, this hybrid unlocks its full potential, resulting in clean, high-quality grain. Since the plant is inherently resistant to many pathogens, we see a reduction in the need for additional fungicide applications, which directly benefits the input budget.

In practical terms, this sunflower is low-maintenance: standard agricultural practices combined with timely herbicide application are enough to achieve a solid, reliable harvest that is easily measured in the combine tank.
