Engineering yield potential: the genetic architecture of "Riabota"

Developed by the Institute of Oilseed Crops of NAAS, the three-line hybrid "Riabota" is a result of breeding focused on stability within Ukraine's temperate climate. Technically classified as a mid-early maturity hybrid, its key advantage lies in its vegetative flexibility, ranging from 90 to 120 days. This allows agronomists to precisely adapt sowing schedules to the specific moisture availability of each season.

Biological defense and immunity profile

The hybrid's resistance to pathogens is built upon advanced genetic selection. In field conditions, "Riabota" demonstrates robust resistance to a complex of destructive diseases:

• Root and stalk rots: Charcoal, white, and gray rots are mitigated through a modified stem tissue structure.
• Foliar infections: Genetic protection suppresses the development of Alternaria, Phomopsis, Phoma, and Septoria.
• Specific threats: Tolerance to downy mildew and rust reduces reliance on intensive fungicide applications.

This resistance profile translates into lower pesticide loads per hectare and reduced production costs, while preserving the leaf surface area essential for optimal photosynthesis.

Production characteristics and oil content

The plant architecture (height of 170–180 cm) provides an optimal ratio of vegetative mass to reproductive parts, facilitating efficient mechanized harvesting. A high oil content (50–55%) reflects successful biochemical breeding of the achenes. The combination of a three-line hybrid structure and high biological potential makes "Riabota" a reliable tool for achieving profitable commercial sunflower yields across various soil and climatic zones in Ukraine.
