Description
YVS 5 is a mid-early sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) hybrid developed at the Southern-Eastern Agriculture Research Institute. Plants of this variety have an average height of 120-130 cm, characterizing them as medium-sized and dwarf. The hybrids have flat, regular-shaped heads of medium size, positioned half-turned downwards at maturity. The seeds are narrowly egg-shaped, black in color with grey stripes, of medium thickness and without spotting. The mass of 1000 seeds is 68-76 g, and the oil content in the seeds reaches 50.3%, providing high oil content — from 49 to 53%.
The YVS 5 hybrid is distinguished by ultra-early ripening with a vegetative period of about 85 days under Saratov conditions. It is resistant to downy mildew, moths, and local races of sunflower wilt, making it suitable for cultivation in various regions, including the Lower Volga, Volga Region, Central Black Earth Region, Ural, and Siberia. Thanks to its early ripening and disease resistance, this hybrid ensures stable yields even under unfavorable meteorological conditions, enhancing its competitiveness in the market.
The economic value of the variety lies in the possibility of early ripening of oilseeds without the need for desiccation, which reduces costs for agricultural activities. Yield in the region of inclusion is on average 17.3 c/ha, while maximum indicators reached 27.9 c/ha. YVS 5 is a simple inter-line hybrid obtained by crossing a sterile female line YV 14 with a multi-head male line YV 932, which ensures its high agronomic characteristics and stability.
