Field Performance: The Zellko Hybrid Experience

RAGT’s French breeding program is renowned for consistency, and the Zellko sunflower hybrid is a prime example of their technical approach. In the field, the crop exhibits impressive uniformity, with plant heights consistently ranging between 170–180 cm. For an equipment operator, this uniformity is a significant operational advantage; it allows for smooth harvesting without overloading the combine header, ensuring that the crop flows efficiently throughout the harvesting process.

Disease Resistance and Crop Health

One of the most stressful aspects of sunflower production is managing pathogenic pressure. Zellko demonstrates a robust defensive profile. We have observed solid resistance against Phomopsis and rust, even in fields with high infection pressure. Furthermore, its resilience against Verticillium and Sclerotinia is notable. When standard crop rotation practices and basic fungicide applications are followed, the head stays healthy, and the crop remains clean right up to the harvest date.

Economic Impact: Oil Content and Yield

The heads are medium-sized and semi-convex in shape. However, Zellko’s true value lies in its genetic potential for oil production. The oil content consistently hits the 50–55% range, making it a highly attractive option for producers aiming for premium quality. At harvest, the density of the seeds within the head is quite high, which directly translates into excellent yield per hectare. This hybrid provides a reliable, high-quality output that makes post-harvest logistics and storage straightforward.
