A stable supersweet variety of Ukrainian breeding for fresh market and deep processing.
Description
Ukrainian breeding excellence in the SH2 segment
"Medunka" is a landmark variety for the domestic market, developed by breeders at the Institute of Grain Crops of the NAAS of Ukraine. In an era dominated by imported hybrids, this variety remains a reliable solution, having proven its value through its adaptability to local climatic conditions and excellent flavor profile.
Technical features
The variety belongs to the SH2 (supersweet) type, which guarantees high sugar content and tender grain texture. The plants reach 180–190 cm in height, with ears forming at an optimal 50–60 cm from the ground, making it convenient for both manual and mechanized harvesting. Key genetic advantages:
- Immunity: High resistance to common smut (Ustilago maydis) minimizes crop losses.
- Protection: Genetic resistance to the European corn borer reduces the need for frequent insecticide treatments.
- Versatile use: 18–20 cm long ears with 14–16 rows of kernels are perfect for the fresh market, freezing (either as whole ears or loose kernels), and industrial canning.
With a maturity period of 75–80 days, the variety consistently achieves high marketability. Despite its strong disease resistance, crop rotation is recommended to prevent stem smut. For producers targeting retail chains or local markets, "Medunka" remains a predictable and economically viable choice that balances quality and cost-efficiency.
