Description

The genus Ostrinia, most notably Ostrinia nubilalis, belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. This insect is widely recognized as one of the most destructive agricultural pests affecting corn production globally.

While corn is the primary host, this polyphagous insect can infest a wide range of plants, including sorghum, millet, sunflowers, and various weeds. This wide host range allows it to maintain populations even in the absence of primary crops, complicating regional management efforts.

The life cycle consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Larvae overwinter within the stalks of host plants. Upon the arrival of warmer temperatures, they pupate and emerge as moths. Depending on local climate conditions, the insect may complete one or multiple generations per growing season.

Damage is primarily caused by the larvae as they tunnel into stalks, ears, and leaf axils. These tunnels disrupt the plant's vascular system, leading to reduced nutrient uptake, stunted growth, and physical weakness. Broken stalks are a common symptom, which complicates mechanical harvesting and leads to significant yield losses.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach (IPM). Key practices include destroying crop residues through tillage, planting resistant or genetically modified hybrids, and monitoring moth flight patterns with pheromone traps. Targeted insecticide applications must be timed precisely to coincide with the period between egg hatching and the larvae's entry into the plant tissue.
