Operating and Cultivation Experience with "Obilny"

When working with the "Obilny" tobacco variety developed by the Federal Scientific Center for Vegetable Growing, it is essential to manage the high-growth habit of the plant. Reaching 180–200 cm, these plants require proactive field management. In open ground conditions, proper hilling is necessary to support the root system, as the heavy, large-leaf canopy is prone to wind-induced lodging.

Field Performance and Maintenance

• Vegetation Cycle: The 110–120 day maturity window dictates a precise planting schedule to ensure full development before early frosts.
• Canopy Management: As a large-leaf variety, consistent sucker removal (disbudding) is mandatory. This ensures that nutrients are directed into the leaf mass, improving both quality and structural integrity.
• Processing: With a nicotine content of 1.5–2%, this variety produces a balanced, medium-strength leaf. The density of the leaf requires adequate spacing during the air-curing process to prevent moisture retention and ensure even fermentation.

For the grower, "Obilny" is a predictable workhorse. It offers high yields and requires standard, well-planned irrigation during the active growth phases. The curing characteristics are favorable for those producing mid-range cigarette tobacco, as the leaf handles standard processing methods well.
