Description
Berley 46 tobacco variety belongs to the skeleton type and is characterized by medium maturity (56‑73 days to ripening), which allows planning of agrotechnical measures within 95‑100 days after sowing. The yield of this variety is stably within the range of 30–35 centners per hectare under favorable soil‑weather conditions and compliance with all growing requirements, with the output of premium commercial varieties reaching 90%.
Berley 46 differs in medium materiality (around 0.49 g/cm²) and nicotine content within 1.5–2%. These indicators make it attractive both for tobacco producers with a moderate nicotine level and for those aiming for higher price categories. The variety is resistant to biotic and abiotic factors: high resistance to diseases and unfavorable weather conditions ensures stable growth throughout the entire vegetation period.
The variety was developed through individual selection from populations of intersort hybrids Berley Polish × Banat, which confirms its genetic stability and potential for further development. Berley 46 is recommended for growing in tobacco farms of the Lysostep zone of Ukraine, where climatic conditions contribute to achieving maximum yield. The use of apomixis allows shortening the breeding cycle by 4–6 years and fixing heterosis, which makes this variety a promising choice for modern tobacco enterprises.
