Cultivation and Field Management

The 'Gorgona' dragonhead (Moldavian balm) is an annual herb that thrives in well-drained, sunny environments. In a practical farming scenario, site selection is critical: full sun exposure is the primary driver for essential oil production. If grown in shaded areas, the plant's aromatic profile loses intensity, which directly impacts the quality of the harvested leaves and flowers.

Operation and Maintenance

• Sowing: Seeds are small and should be sown shallowly, no deeper than 1 cm. Keeping the seedbed moist during the germination period is essential, as the soil surface dries out quickly in direct sun.
• Spacing: To prevent fungal issues common in dense herb patches, maintain a spacing of at least 20–25 cm between plants. This ensures proper airflow, which is the best defense against mildew.
• Harvesting: The most efficient harvest time is during full bloom. Use sharp shears to cut stems 10–15 cm above the ground. This promotes secondary growth, allowing for multiple harvests within a single season.

Processing and Storage

To preserve the potent lemon-like essential oils, drying must be done in a shaded, well-ventilated area at temperatures not exceeding 35°C. Excessive heat or direct sunlight will cause the aromatic compounds to evaporate rapidly. Once dried, the herb should be stored in airtight containers; the leaves are highly absorbent and will readily take on moisture and odors from the surrounding environment.
