Bursaphelenchus cocophilus
Description
Systematic position and type of pathogen. Bursaphelenchus cocophilus is a plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Aphelenchoididae. It is classified as an obligate endoparasite that specifically invades the vascular tissues of palm species, causing severe systemic infections that often lead to the total collapse of the host plant.
Diseases and crops. The pathogen is responsible for the devastating Red Ring Disease. While it primarily affects coconut palms (Cocos nucifera) and African oil palms (Elaeis guineensis), it serves as a major limiting factor for palm cultivation across tropical regions, including Central and South America, as well as parts of the Caribbean.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is intricately linked to the palm weevil, Rhynchophorus palmarum, which acts as the primary vector. The nematode larvae attach to the weevil and are transported to healthy palms. Once inside the host, they migrate through the internal tissues, feeding on cells and reproducing rapidly, which facilitates the colonization of the entire vascular system.
Developmental conditions and impact. The nematode thrives in warm, humid climates which favor both the survival of the vector and the development of the parasite within the host. The infection causes severe wilting, chlorosis of the fronds, and the characteristic internal red-brown ring lesion in the stem. Economic damage is substantial, often resulting in 100% mortality of infected stands.
Control and management measures. Managing Bursaphelenchus cocophilus requires a proactive approach due to the lack of curative treatments.
- Early detection and immediate destruction of symptomatic trees by burning or burial.
- Aggressive control of the palm weevil population using pheromone-baited traps.
- Implementation of strict phytosanitary measures to prevent the movement of infected plant materials.
