Description
The stem and bulb nematode (Ditylenchus dipsaci) is a microscopic worm of the phylum Nematoda, family Anguinidae. It is a major plant-parasitic nematode known for causing significant damage to a wide range of agricultural and horticultural crops, often leading to severe losses in yield and product quality.
This parasite causes a disease referred to as ditylenchosis. Major host plants include Allium species (onions, garlic), legumes (peas, beans), strawberries, potatoes, and numerous ornamental bulbs. The infection typically results in distorted growth, swelling of stems and leaves, necrosis, and the rotting of bulbs, which are critical diagnostic symptoms for growers.
The life cycle consists of an egg stage, four larval stages, and an adult stage. Development occurs within the plant tissues where the nematodes feed on cell sap using their stylets. A key biological adaptation of Ditylenchus dipsaci is its ability to enter an anhydrobiotic state, surviving for years in dry plant debris or soil until moisture levels become favorable again for reactivation.
Environmental conditions such as high humidity and cool to moderate temperatures are essential for the nematode to move through the soil film and invade new host plants. Dissemination occurs primarily through the movement of infested plant material (bulbs, seeds, sets), as well as through agricultural machinery, irrigation water, and contaminated soil, making containment a top priority.

- Use certified, nematode-free seeds and planting material.
- Implement strict sanitation of farming tools and equipment.
- Destroy volunteer plants and infested debris after harvest.
- Apply soil treatments and nematicides when recommended.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Since chemical control can be limited by regulatory restrictions and the parasite's hidden nature within plant tissues, primary efforts should focus on prevention, including heat treatment of bulbs and long-term soil management to reduce population levels in the field.
