Systematic position and type of pathogen: Heterodera filipjevi belongs to the kingdom Animalia, phylum Nematoda, and the family Heteroderidae. It is a sedentary endoparasite that requires a living host to complete its life cycle. Known as a cereal cyst nematode, it is a specialized pathogen that specifically targets the root system of monocotyledonous plants, leading to severe agricultural damage.
Diseases and host crops: This nematode causes cereal cyst disease. Its primary hosts are cereal crops, including wheat, barley, rye, and oats. The invasion leads to a reduction in root surface area, causing stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and reduced tillering, which significantly impacts the plant's ability to absorb water and minerals from the soil.
Biology and life cycle: The nematode persists in the soil as cysts, which are the dead bodies of females filled with eggs. Once the soil temperature reaches favorable levels, the second-stage juveniles hatch and migrate toward the roots. After penetration, the juveniles induce the formation of a syncytium (feeding site). Males leave the roots to find females, while females remain attached, swell, and eventually turn into cysts.
Developmental conditions and economic impact: Heterodera filipjevi is well-adapted to cooler climates with moderate soil moisture. Its economic impact is substantial, often leading to yield losses ranging from 20% to 50% in heavily infested fields. The patchy distribution of stunted plants in a field is a hallmark sign of a nematode infestation, which often persists for many years due to the durability of the cysts.

The most effective cultural method is crop rotation with non-host plants such as oilseed rape or legumes to reduce the population density in the soil.
