Soybean cyst nematode

Heterodera glycines

Description

The soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines) is a microscopic soil-borne parasite belonging to the family Heteroderidae. It is widely considered the most damaging pathogen affecting soybean production globally, as it feeds on the roots, depriving the plant of essential nutrients and reducing its overall vigor.

The pathogen causes a condition known as soybean cyst nematode disease. Upon infecting the roots, the nematode induces the formation of specialized syncytial cells that provide a continuous food supply for the parasite. Host plants primarily include soybean (Glycine max), but the nematode can also colonize various other legumes, which must be considered in rotation schemes to prevent population buildup.

The life cycle of Heterodera glycines is complex, involving four larval stages before reaching adulthood. Eggs are protected within the tough, leathery wall of the dead female's body, known as a cyst. These cysts can persist in the soil for many years, waiting for environmental signals like root exudates from a host plant to trigger the hatching process.

Environmental factors, particularly soil temperature and moisture, dictate the rate of the nematode's development. Warm, well-drained soils are ideal for their lifecycle. Spread occurs primarily through the movement of infested soil attached to agricultural machinery, farm equipment, or during flood events, making biosecurity on the farm a paramount issue for prevention.

Economic damage manifests as stunted plants, chlorosis, and significantly lower yields, which often occur in patchy patterns within the field. Management requires a multifaceted strategy:

  • Rotating soybeans with non-host crops such as corn or wheat to starve the population.
  • Planting nematode-resistant soybean varieties to minimize losses.
  • Applying seed treatments and biological nematicides during the sowing process.
  • Monitoring soil health and nematode density through systematic soil sampling.
  • Cleaning equipment thoroughly when moving between fields to stop the spread of cysts.
