The pea cyst nematode (Heterodera goettingiana) is a significant soil-borne plant pathogen belonging to the Heteroderidae family. It is a specialized obligate parasite that specifically infects legumes, causing serious agricultural damage. The nematode is recognized for its ability to survive in the soil for extended periods by forming protective cysts, which represent the dead bodies of females containing eggs.

This parasite affects major leguminous crops, including peas (Pisum sativum), vetch, lentils, and field beans. Infestation symptoms are often confused with nutrient deficiencies, featuring stunted plant growth, chlorotic yellowing of leaves, and premature wilting. If the roots are carefully washed, tiny white, yellow, or dark brown lemon-shaped cysts can be observed attached to the root surface.

The life cycle involves the larvae emerging from the cysts in response to specific root exudates from host plants. Once they penetrate the roots, they become sedentary, feed on vascular tissues, and create specialized feeding sites known as syncytia. After fertilization, the females swell and eventually develop into hard-walled cysts that provide protection against chemicals, predators, and environmental stress for up to several years.

The development of Heterodera goettingiana is favored by moderate soil temperatures and high moisture levels, which align with the growth patterns of peas. The nematode spreads primarily through the movement of infested soil attached to machinery, boots, and tools, or via water runoff. The economic impact is severe, as heavy infestations can lead to significant biomass reduction and drastic yield losses in pulse crops.
