Description
Hop cyst nematode, caused by the sedentary endoparasitic nematode Heterodera humuli, is a significant pathogen affecting hop yards globally. Belonging to the family Heteroderidae, this organism is a specialized feeder that directly impacts the root vascular system of its host plant, disrupting water and nutrient transport and causing economic losses in the hop industry.
The primary host for this pathogen is the common hop (Humulus lupulus). Infested plants exhibit symptoms of stunting, chlorosis, and premature senescence of the lower leaves. In cases of high infestation, the root system appears sickly with numerous tiny lemon-shaped cysts visible on the root surfaces, leading to the gradual decline of the plant's health and yield.
The life cycle begins with the second-stage juveniles (J2) emerging from cysts in response to root exudates from the host. These juveniles penetrate the roots and establish a permanent feeding site (syncytium). Females eventually swell and break through the root cortex, remaining attached to the surface as protective cysts, which allow the eggs to survive in the soil for several years even in the absence of a host.
Development and population expansion are favored by soil temperatures between 15°C and 22°C and adequate soil moisture. Because the pathogen survives as cysts, it is highly resilient to adverse environmental conditions. Spread between fields occurs primarily through the movement of contaminated soil on machinery, infested nursery stock, or irrigation water, making site sanitation critical.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical interventions to suppress nematode populations below economic thresholds:
- Strict nursery stock inspection to prevent introduction.
- Rotation with non-host crops to reduce soil populations.
- Deep plowing and proper management of volunteer hop plants.
- Monitoring soil nematode density before establishing new hop yards.
- Application of targeted nematicides where registered and necessary.
