It is an obligate sedentary endoparasite, classified as a cyst-forming nematode, which primarily targets the root systems of various cereal crop species.
Diseases and host crops: This pathogen is responsible for causing nematode-related growth disorders in cereals. The primary hosts include winter and spring wheat, barley, oats, and several species of wild grasses. The nematode settles within the root tissue, causing the formation of typical cysts, which interfere with the plant’s ability to transport water and minerals.
Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle includes egg, larval (L2-L4), and adult stages. The nematode survives in the soil as cysts—hardened, protective female bodies containing eggs that can persist for several years under adverse conditions.
