Description

Systematic position and type of pathogen. Hoplolaimus tylenchiformis belongs to the kingdom Animalia, phylum Nematoda, family Hoplolaimidae. It is a well-known plant-parasitic nematode, commonly referred to as a lance nematode. It acts as both an ectoparasite and a migratory endoparasite, invading the cortical tissues of host plant roots and causing significant physiological stress to the host.

Diseases and host crops. This nematode causes stunted growth, chlorosis, and root necrosis, often leading to reduced yield and poor plant vigor. It has a broad host range, severely affecting major crops such as corn, soybeans, cotton, and various forest tree species. The primary damage involves mechanical disruption of root cells, which frequently facilitates secondary infections by soil-borne pathogens like Fusarium or Rhizoctonia.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle includes eggs, four juvenile stages, and adult stages. Both the juvenile and adult forms are capable of damaging plant tissue. Hoplolaimus tylenchiformis uses its heavy, robust stylet to penetrate root cells and extract nutrients. These nematodes can move freely through soil and within root tissues, allowing them to adapt to changing environmental conditions and host availability.

Developmental and spread conditions. The development of this nematode is most favorable in moist, well-aerated soils. It thrives particularly well in sandy or sandy-loam soils where mobility is less restricted by soil particles. The spread of the pest occurs primarily through the movement of infested soil on farm machinery, tools, irrigation water, and infected nursery stock, facilitating its dispersal across fields.

Pathogenicity and control measures. The economic damage is significant due to impaired water and nutrient uptake, leading to yellowing and premature death of foliage. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control:

  • Implementing crop rotation with non-host species to starve the nematode population.
  • Utilizing resistant or tolerant cultivars when available.
  • Applying targeted nematicides in fields with heavy infestation levels.
  • Cleaning machinery thoroughly to prevent the transfer of infested soil between different fields.
