Meloidogyne citri is a significant species of phytoparasitic nematode belonging to the genus Meloidogyne. Classified within the kingdom Animalia and phylum Nematoda, this organism acts as an obligate plant parasite. It primarily targets the root systems of citrus trees, posing a serious threat to fruit production in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

This pathogen is the causal agent of root-knot disease in citrus. The infection is characterized by the formation of distinctive galls or knots on the root tissue, which disrupts the uptake of water and essential nutrients. Infected plants typically show symptoms such as stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, thinning of the canopy, and a marked reduction in both fruit yield and quality.

The life cycle of Meloidogyne citri is complex. Infective second-stage juveniles (J2) migrate through the soil to locate and penetrate host roots. Once inside, they induce the development of specialized giant cells which serve as a permanent food source. Adult females remain sedentary within these galls, producing eggs in large, protective gelatinous masses that ensure the continued cycle of infestation.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the nematode's proliferation. Meloidogyne citri thrives in well-aerated, sandy soils and warm temperatures. The parasite is primarily disseminated through the movement of infested nursery stock, contaminated soil attached to machinery, or irrigation water flowing through infested orchards. Once established in a field, the population density can rise rapidly.

Managing this pest requires a multifaceted approach due to its persistence in the soil. Effective control measures include:

  • Strict quarantine and the use of certified, nematode-free nursery stock.
  • Selection of resistant or tolerant citrus rootstocks.
  • Pre-plant soil fumigation to lower initial nematode populations.
  • Cultural practices like managing weeds that may serve as alternative hosts.
  • Biological control using beneficial microbes such as Pasteuria penetrans or specific fungi.
