Description
The Rice root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne graminicola) is a microscopic obligate plant parasite within the order Tylenchida. It is recognized as a significant threat to global rice production, particularly in intensive agricultural systems where continuous cropping creates ideal conditions for its proliferation.
The primary symptom of infestation is the formation of galls on the roots. These swellings disrupt the plant's vascular system, preventing the effective uptake of nutrients and water. Infected plants exhibit stunted growth, yellowing (chlorosis), and severe yield losses, often resulting in patchy and uneven crop development throughout the field.
The life cycle of Meloidogyne graminicola begins with eggs hatching into second-stage juveniles (J2) in the soil. These motile juveniles invade the roots, establishing feeding sites that lead to the characteristic galling. As the parasite matures, it becomes sessile, and the females produce large masses of eggs, ensuring the continuation of the infestation in the subsequent growing season.
Development is heavily influenced by soil moisture and temperature. The nematode is highly adapted to the aquatic environments found in flooded rice paddies, where it can survive submerged for extended periods. Dissemination is primarily facilitated by irrigation water runoff and the movement of contaminated soil particles and equipment between fields.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for control. Strategies include:
