Description
Rice root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne oryzae) is a destructive plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Heteroderidae. As a microscopic endoparasite, it specifically targets the root systems of various plants, with a significant economic focus on rice production worldwide. It ranks among the most challenging soil-borne pathogens due to its ability to survive within root tissues.
The primary symptom of Meloidogyne oryzae infestation is the formation of galls (knots) on the roots of rice plants. These swellings are the result of the nematode inducing physiological changes in the root cortex, causing hypertrophy and hyperplasia. This damage restricts the plant's ability to uptake water and essential nutrients, leading to yellowing leaves, stunting, and overall weak crop performance.
The life cycle of this pathogen involves several stages: the egg, four juvenile stages, and the sedentary adult female. Second-stage juveniles are the infectious form that migrates through the soil to locate host roots. Once inside, they establish a permanent feeding site. Adult females are typically pear-shaped and remain embedded in the root tissue, depositing hundreds of eggs in a protective gelatinous matrix.
Environmental factors play a crucial role in the dissemination and development of Meloidogyne oryzae. The nematode thrives in warm, water-saturated soils typically found in paddy fields. Irrigation water acts as a primary vector for spreading juveniles between fields, while the persistent nature of eggs in the soil allows the pathogen to survive during fallow periods or between cropping seasons.
Effective management and control are vital for protecting rice yields. Strategies include:
- Utilizing resistant or tolerant rice cultivars.
- Implementing crop rotation with non-host species to break the life cycle.
- Proper field sanitation and cleaning of farm equipment.
