Description

Meloidogyne salasi is a plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, and family Meloidogynidae. This species is recognized as a specific pathogen that primarily attacks the root systems of rice plants, causing severe physiological stress and economic losses in agricultural regions.

The nematode causes the formation of galls (knots) on the roots, which is the primary symptom of the infestation. These galls disrupt the normal vascular function of the root system, inhibiting nutrient and water uptake. Infected plants often show stunted growth, yellowing, and decreased biomass, which significantly impacts grain yield potential.

The biological development of Meloidogyne salasi proceeds through four molts, with the second-stage juvenile (J2) being the infective form that penetrates the root tissue. Once inside, the nematode establishes a feeding site, causing host cells to enlarge into "giant cells." The female nematode remains sedentary in the root, where she lays eggs within a gelatinous matrix.

Environmental conditions such as warm temperatures and soil moisture are critical for the nematode's survival and propagation. The pathogen can be easily spread through moving soil, contaminated agricultural tools, and irrigation water. The presence of alternative weed hosts also plays a vital role in maintaining the nematode population during off-seasons.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key methods include the deployment of nematode-resistant rice varieties, extended crop rotation cycles using non-host crops, and rigorous field hygiene. Chemical nematicides are occasionally utilized in high-pressure scenarios, but sustainable cultural practices remain the most critical component for long-term control of this soil-borne pathogen.
