Description

Systematic position and pathogen type. Phytophthora drechsleri belongs to the kingdom Chromista, phylum Oomycota (oomycetes), and family Pythiaceae. Although it resembles fungi, it is a water mold. This pathogen is highly specialized in aquatic and semi-aquatic environments, which defines its epidemiology and potential to cause widespread damage to various plant species.

Diseases caused and host range. This organism is a primary cause of crown rot, stem rot, and root rot. It affects a broad range of agricultural crops, including cucurbits (melons, cucumbers, watermelons), peppers, tomatoes, and even several ornamental trees and succulents. The infection often manifests as sudden wilting, tissue browning, and eventually plant collapse.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves the production of motile zoospores that migrate through saturated soil to reach host roots. Under unfavorable conditions, it produces dormant oospores. These thick-walled structures ensure the pathogen survives in the soil for years, making it an extremely persistent threat that can re-emerge whenever favorable moisture conditions return.

Environmental conditions and impact. The pathogen thrives in warm temperatures, ideally between +20°C and +30°C, combined with high soil moisture or flooding. Its impact is severe, often resulting in complete stand loss in fields or greenhouses. By destroying the root system, Phytophthora drechsleri effectively shuts down the plant’s nutrient uptake, leading to rapid senescence and death.

Protection and control measures. Management of Phytophthora drechsleri requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to be effective:

  • Improve soil drainage to eliminate standing water and saturated conditions.
  • Practice crop rotation with non-host species to reduce inoculum density in the soil.
  • Use of soil disinfestation techniques, such as steam treatment or solarization in greenhouses.
  • Application of oomycete-specific fungicides, such as metalaxyl or phosphonates, as a preventative measure.
  • Strict sanitation protocols to prevent the transport of infected soil and plant material to clean areas.
