Pratylenchus agilis

Pratylenchus agilis is a species of plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Pratylenchidae. As a root-lesion nematode, it is a significant pathogen that colonizes the cortex of plant roots, leading to necrotic lesions and systemic damage to the host plant's vital functions.

Systematically, it is classified within the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, and the genus Pratylenchus. Unlike sedentary nematodes, this species remains mobile throughout its life cycle, moving within and between roots as it feeds on the internal tissues, which is a defining characteristic of its migratory endoparasitic nature.

The life cycle encompasses eggs, four juvenile stages, and adults. Both juveniles and adults are capable of infecting plant roots. The nematode exhibits high environmental adaptability, allowing it to thrive in diverse soil conditions by moving vertically and horizontally in the soil profile to locate healthy root tissue.

Development and spread are facilitated by moist soil environments and suitable host plants. The pathogen survives adverse conditions, such as winter frost or drought, by entering a state of dormancy within the soil matrix or residing in root debris left in the field, ensuring its persistence for subsequent planting seasons.

The economic impact of this nematode is severe, often manifesting as stunted plant growth, chlorosis, reduced nutrient uptake, and increased susceptibility to secondary fungal and bacterial root rots. Effective control requires an integrated approach, including the rotation with non-host crops, soil solarization, the use of organic amendments to boost beneficial microbial activity, and, where necessary, the application of targeted chemical nematicides.
