Pratylenchus jaehni

Pratylenchus jaehni is a species of plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Pratylenchidae. Known as a lesion nematode, this organism is a microscopic endoparasite that feeds primarily on the root tissues of host plants. It plays a significant role in reducing the vigor of agricultural crops through systemic destruction of the root cortex.

The primary hosts for this nematode include citrus species, though it may be found in association with other plants in infested soils. The damage caused by P. jaehni includes the formation of lesions on the roots, which interferes with the absorption of water and mineral nutrients. This results in stunting, yellowing of foliage, and reduced yields for the affected crops.

The biological cycle consists of eggs, four juvenile stages, and the adult stage. The nematodes move through the soil and penetrate the root cortex, where they migrate between cells, consuming their contents. This continuous feeding and movement inside the roots lead to tissue death and create entry points for secondary fungal and bacterial pathogens that further exacerbate the damage.

Development and spread are favored by moist soil conditions and optimal temperatures typical of subtropical climates. The nematode is primarily disseminated through the movement of infested soil, contaminated agricultural machinery, and the trade of infected nursery stock. Because they can survive within root fragments, sanitation is critical in preventing the introduction of this pest into clean fields.

Effective control requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Strategies include regular soil testing to monitor populations, the use of certified pathogen-free planting material, and appropriate crop rotation where possible. In severe infestations, the application of chemical nematicides may be necessary, complemented by cultural practices that promote strong root growth to help plants withstand nematode pressure.
