The Mediterranean lesion nematode (Pratylenchus mediterraneus) is a plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Pratylenchidae. It is classified as a migratory endoparasite, meaning it constantly moves through plant tissues, primarily roots, rather than settling in one spot to feed, which leads to extensive tissue damage.
This pathogen causes pratylenchosis, a disease affecting a wide range of agricultural crops, particularly cereals like wheat and barley, as well as legumes. By damaging the cortical cells of the root system, the nematode interferes with the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients, resulting in stunted growth and severe yield losses.
The life cycle of Pratylenchus mediterraneus is characterized by high adaptability. Eggs are laid in the soil or within root tissues. After hatching, the juveniles and adults use their stylet to penetrate roots, moving between cells and consuming cytoplasm.
