Pratylenchus scribneri is a species of root-lesion nematode belonging to the Pratylenchidae family. As a migratory endoparasite, it penetrates the roots of host plants, moving through the cortical tissue and causing significant mechanical damage and physiological stress, which severely impacts the plant's overall health.

This nematode has a wide host range, posing a serious threat to crops such as potatoes, corn, soybeans, and various vegetable varieties. By feeding on the roots, the nematode causes necrotic lesions, leading to reduced root mass, stunted growth, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections by soil-borne fungi and bacteria, often resulting in severe yield losses.

The life cycle of Pratylenchus scribneri involves several stages: eggs, four juvenile stages, and adults. All mobile stages can invade and exit roots to seek out new feeding sites. The rate of development is highly dependent on soil temperature, with optimal conditions accelerating population growth and increasing the severity of plant infestation in the field.

Survival and spread are facilitated by the nematode's ability to persist in the soil for long periods. They are spread across fields via farm machinery, movement of infested soil, irrigation water, and the use of infected plant materials like tubers. Their presence is often difficult to detect until symptoms of nutrient deficiency or drought stress become visible in the crop canopy.

Effective management and control strategies include:

  • Implementing crop rotation with non-host crops to starve the nematode population.
  • Utilizing clean, nematode-free certified seed and planting material.
  • Applying cover crops or bio-fumigants that suppress nematode activity.
  • Regular soil testing to monitor nematode population densities before planting.
  • Using chemical nematicides only when threshold levels are exceeded and local regulations permit.
