Description
Systematic position and pathogen type: Rotylenchulus reniformis, commonly known as the reniform nematode, is a microscopic animal belonging to the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, order Rhabditida. It is a highly specialized semi-endoparasitic plant pathogen recognized as a major limiting factor for crop production in tropical and subtropical agriculture globally.
Diseases and host crops: This nematode has a very wide host range, attacking over 300 different plant species. Economically significant hosts include cotton, soybeans, sweet potatoes, pineapples, and various vegetable crops like tomatoes and peppers. It causes severe stunting, chlorosis, and root system degradation, which significantly reduces yield and the plant's ability to withstand abiotic stresses.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves several larval stages before reaching adulthood. The female nematode exhibits a unique semi-endoparasitic behavior: after mating, she partially embeds her head into the host's root cortex while the rest of her body remains outside. The posterior part of the female's body swells into a kidney-like shape (giving it the name "reniform"), where she deposits eggs in a protective gelatinous matrix.
Development and spread conditions: The reniform nematode thrives in warm climates and prefers well-drained soils. Its development is highly dependent on soil temperature, with optimal activity occurring between 25°C and 30°C. The pathogen is primarily spread through the movement of infested soil by farm machinery, irrigation water, and the transport of contaminated nursery stock or soil-bearing transplants.
Damage and control measures: The nematode causes mechanical damage and redirects plant nutrients to sustain its development, leading to significantly stunted root systems and poor crop vigor. Effective management involves integrated strategies such as crop rotation with non-host plants, the use of resistant crop varieties, application of soil fumigants or nematicides, and rigorous sanitation practices to prevent the introduction of the nematode into non-infested fields.
